German politics, Angela Merkel & the question of CDU leadership | Europe In :60 | GZERO Media
Carl Bildt, former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Sweden, provides his perspective:
What are your takeaways from the Munich Security Conference?
I think there are three: The US message was essentially we should love sovereignty, I should dislike China, and Huawei in particular. European message: We have to develop an appetite for power, but it may take some time. German message: Well, we might get our act together.
How long is Angela Merkel going to be chancellor?
Well, it remains to be seen. Next election is in the autumn of '21. But now the entire question, who's going to be the CDU chairman and then candidate for the chancellorship? It's open again. So, and I think that will be decided before the summer. It's only when we know who's going to be the new candidate that we can make an accurate assessment of that. Basic tip is still that she's going to be there until next autumn.
